I'm getting the same phone calls from Northstar and a Ms. Hargrove.  She really is EXTREMELY RUDE and accuses my coworkers of screaning my phone calls-which is not true.  She also says that she's left me numerous phone messages at home, which isn't true, either.  All I've gotten in the last two months or so are a lot of hang up phone calls.  My machine will pick up when I'm not home, or when I can't get to the phone on time before the machine will pick it up.  I did manage to get a phone message from her about 10-12 days or so ago, and within the last week, I have also gotten a phone call from a Mr. Ward from the same company and the same phone number.  Although he was very nice over the phone, I still will not call either one of them back because I was very suspicious of them because of all the hang up phone calls.  They also say tha they are representing Bank of America.

Constantly calling and hanging up when voicemail kicks in.  Finally left a message- a Miss Hargrove at Northstar 'pre-legal services'.  No message left re: intent of call.  Did not have a correct ID for the person she was calling.  This stinks of a scam, since most concerns who want to discuss 'legal' issues will send a letter detailing the issue.  Also, this stinks of computer dialing, since usually the call ends as soon as voicemail kicks in.  Who are these people and how does the general public make them cease and desist?  My phone number is unlisted, so how did this agency obtain it- random computer dialing? I consider any multiple calls without follow-up with a legal statement to be harrassment. Any way to phrase a reply that will cause the calls to cease?

Sick of Northstar
The caller is Northstar.  They are a collection company.  It is a violation of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act to harrass.  It is considered harrassment if they call to embarrass by saying they are collecting a debt.  They have no idea who might be listening to the call or message on a machine or voicemail saying they are collecting a debt.  If they have a disclaimer up front this call is for so and so and if the person listening isn't so and so they should hang up is irrelevant.  The wrong person might still listen anyway and they have no way of enforcing their disclaimer.  The listener has no liability, legal or otherwise.A lawyer might or might not think this is enough to go after the collection company.  You can file a complaint with your state's comsumer protection agency but they won't do much unless they get a lot of complaints about a particular company.  You might want to talk to them and see what they're calling about, get the particulars of the debt and send them a dispute and validation letter which most companies will give up on receipt of that.  You must do it within 30 days of receipt of their letter informing you they are collecting a debt if they sent you one.  If they didn't there is no limit but courts will generally accept it if they say they sent you one so get that letter out to them quickly after you start receiving such calls.  You can also hope they do start harrassing you so you can get a lawyer.  This is easy for companies such as Northstar if you live in a state where recording of conversations is legal.  If you don't then you can refuse to speak to them directly and only allow them to communicate with you by leaving messages on your machine and calling them after hours and recording the messages you leave on their voicemail.  Since it's not a two way converation, only you leaving a message and they can't reply with anything that would in any way be harmful to them it is legal to record the message you leave for them.Good luck in dealing with them.

After approximately 2 months of bothersome calls during the day(I am a day sleeper-work nights/graveyard) this had become too much.  The person they were looking for was named "Marjorie"-of course....no Marjorie here.  V2I just now called the number back and a "John" answered the phone.....I was so pissed off I couldn't explain myself very well,John then said all I had to do was to call them back and tell them it was a wrong number.  We will see if this has any effect on the stoppage of these bothersome calls.  I also asked them if they did any searches on the internet for these folks they are *supposedly* trying to locate...that was met with silence on the other end.  When I said "Don't call this number again", this "John" person immediately hung up.  Something needs to be done about this kind of crap.

Just tell them you filed bankruptcy as it will stall the calls. That's what I did. Visit www.filebankruptcy.com for more info on this tactic.

I receive several calls a day from you. Since they come with name unknown I do not answer. You fill my answer machine with messages. I do not owe anyone anything, and you have messages for an Earnest. There is no Earnest at this address. Please stop calling.
