Received 6 calls so far today from 888-802-1290.  Thanks for everyone that posts....first thing we do is google when we don't know the phone number.  It is a scam where the automated system wants a social security #.  The interesting part?  Why this scam?  To this phone?  For the person in question that doesn't USE that phone #?  Tells me there is a leak in the servers or people working for the government.  Probability of matching on this situation and scam?  0%

Sorry to disagree.  Social Security will never call anyone on the phone and ask for their social security number or even the last 4 digits.  This number is a scam.  Please don't be fooled.

I received calls from the same number today. I've always operated under the belief that if the caller's name comes up as "unavailable", they must be up to no good. But that is not the case here.I contacted the NY Social Security office and they told me that they sometimes use an automated system to give people information regarding their case and that's what this is.So in this case, it's not a scam. It's all legit.Of course you can always call your local Social Security Office for help. It's my experience that the Admin in DC doesn't always know what the local offices are doing.

By the way if Soc Sec Admin calls you, the called ID comes up as Soc Sec Adm or US Gov. ... NEVER as Unavailable or Unknown

I received calls from 888-802-1290 10 times today. (1-28-08)States they are NY state Div of Disability Determination. Basically this is the Social Security Adm in NY.  They ask for the last 4 digits of your SS #. DO NOT GIVE IT OUT!!I called Soc Sec Admin in Wash D.C. after trying to get thru to NY office unsuccessfully. They are not trying to contact me for any reason. This is a fraud they are trying to get SS numbers and the number is being reported as a scam by Soc. Sec.The first 3 numbers of your SS are the state your are born in. Ex: NY is 050 to 134 is determined by your zip code or field office before 1972.So if they know your state of birth that narrows those numbers. The second set of 2 numbers are a group number asigned during a specific time frame of applicationThe last 4 are your serial number assigned at the time of application. Those are the only random numbers.Scammers can then take your 4 numbers and decode the rest to figure your SS number.SO DONT GIVE IT OUT! and DONT USE IT FOR BUSINESS PURPOSES. Use instead another number. If you receive a call looking for this info from you, contact your phone company customer service and SS Fraud at 1-800-269-0271 and report it.Hope this helps.
